Valérie Hallier - Projects

Tedious & Brief

Pieces created during my residency at NARS Foundation. Each explores the potential of flowers as communication devices to express the evolution of femininity, reversing the gaze on beauty and fragility while commenting on longevity, persistency and freedom.

23 angry roses is a temporary installation that reverses the usual romantic idea of red roses on its head, literally, revealing tooth-full angry mouths decaying over time. The heads are served on a tray.

Bagged displays the "immortalization" of all the bouquets I enjoy. After each flower has been dismembered, dried up, organized by color, flower types and parts, each group is packed into sandwich bags. Bagged mimics scientific evidence collection and dramatizes the opposition of two mundane items, flowers and sandwich bags. While opposing visually the natural and the manufactured, the precious and fragile with the cheap and common the piece reflects on the tension between the "natural" and the "unnatural". Bagged was created during an artist residency at NARS Foundation.
